Shangri-La's Embrace Project, begun in 2009, commits each hotel to a 10-15-year partnership with a chosen beneficiary working on children's health or education.
Baotou Shangri-La Hotel has established a 15-year Embrace Project with the Baotou Children's Welfare Institution that focuses on the rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy. The hotel provides funds and infrastructure while organizing volunteers to teach the children life skills.
The hotel also sponsors a simulated supermarket where the children learn a bit of the outside world by "shopping" for toys and other goods under the guidance of teachers.
It has also organized a home setting at the institution with furniture, appliances and daily commodities, and pays the salary of house parents, each of whom cares for three children.
Cooks at the home were trained by the hotel, too.
