As the military conflict in Syria escalates, China called for related parties in Syria to fully implement the UN Security Council’s resolution as a priority and for the international community to press for a political solution to the Syrian crisis, said a senior Chinese diplomat on Sunday.
"The international community should move forward in tandem in terms of a cease-fire, political negotiations, humanitarian aid and joint efforts against terrorism to push for a political solution to the Syrian issue,” said Liu Jieyi, the Chinese permanent representative to the United Nations, at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on the current situation in Syria.
The meeting was held at the request of the United States, Britain and France following the renewed violence in the northern Syria city of Aleppo.
Staffan de Mistura, the UN’s special envoy for Syria, made a strong appeal to the Security Council, particularly permanent members Russia and the US, to salvage the recently collapsed cessation of hostilities, end the bloodshed and speed aid into the iconic city where some 2 million people remain under a de facto siege.
"These are indeed chilling days for Syria and particularly, for the people of Aleppo, as last week was one of the worst in the six years of the conflict,” de Mistura told the emergency session.
De Mistura said the council had the responsibility to re-launch the cessation of hostilities" and reiterated his appeal for a common course of action, led by Russia and the US, in three areas: ensuring a cease-fire; establishing weekly 48-hour pauses in the fighting to allow in aid and repairs for Aleppo's damaged water and power facilities; and allow medical evacuations for urgent cases in and around the city.
China has been deeply concerned about the recent intensity of the violence in Syria, which caused heavy civilian casualties, and an assault on a UN humanitarian convoy, Liu said.
He said China hoped that the new cease-fire agreement brokered by Russia and the US will be effectively implemented, providing opportunities for improving the situation on the ground in Syria, while the international community should urge all related parties in Syria to resume the cease-fire as soon as possible.
"The more complex the situation in Syria, the more important it is to uphold the general direction of a political solution,” Liu said.
"The UN’s role as the main channel of mediation should be given full play. We should continue to support Special Envoy de Mistura in his efforts to re-launch the Geneva Talks as soon as possible. We need to stick to the Syrian-owned and Syrian-led process to make arrangements that accommodate all interests,” Liu said.
China has been making efforts for the political solution to Syrian crisis and has been pressing related parties in Syria to end conflicts as soon as possible to reach a comprehensive political solution, Liu added.
China is willing to play a constructive role in pushing for "a full, just and appropriate solution" to the Syrian crisis, he said.
