Police have detained a man suspected of starting a fire on a bus in Beijing, according to city authorities.
No one was injured and the fire only caused light damage to the vehicle.
The fire started at the back of a No 9 bus at about 5:15 pm on July 28 as it passed the intersection of Jintai Lu and Chaoyang Beilu in Chaoyang district, according to a post on the micro blog of the city’s public security bureau on July 29.
Investigations are ongoing, but police say evidence suggests the fire was started deliberately.
The suspect was detained at 9:30 pm on July 28, according to the micro blog post.
When the fire started, the bus’s driver immediately stopped the vehicle and opened the door, while a conductor evacuated passengers and put out the flames with a fire extinguisher, the police said.
A fruit storeowner near the scene said that more than 10 people fled the bus, which was filled with smoke, the Beijing Morning Post reported.
A worker at a construction site nearby also said that the bus smelled of burned materials and that some of its seats were damaged, the report added.
