Authorities in New York City say two people died and nine others injured in a shooting early on Friday outside the Empire State Building in midtown Manhattan and the dead included the gunman who was killed by police. The perpetrator was identified as Jeffrey Johnson, 56, who used to work at Hazan Import Corp., a women's fashion accessories designer, near the iconic Empire State Building. Johnson was laid off one year ago.

Bloomberg speech highlights:

"Earlier this morning, a man who had been fired from his job about a year or so began shooting here at the Empire State Building. He killed one person, at least nine shot, and some may have been accidentally shot by the police officers responded immediately. I ask everyone to keep victims in their thoughts and in their prayers. This is a terrible tragedy, and there's no doubt that it would have been more tragic without the heroic acts of the policemen. Every day, the police officers put their lives on the line to protect us.

NYC is the safest big city in the country, but we are not immune to the national problem of gun violence.
