SEOUL - South Korea's second-largest umbrella union held a mass rally in Seoul Friday, calling for an end to layoffs and regularization of temporary workers.

Some 20,000 union workers from the Korea Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), including truckers, textile workers and health workers, gathered at Seoul Station Plaza in central Seoul.

The rally came two days after the KCTU, which boasts 580,000 members, called the first general strike in four years.

The walkout, which involved 137,000 union members, called on the government to revise labor laws, cut working hours and stop the privatization of state-led companies.
